Mauritius is a small island on the southwest part of the Indian Ocean. It is considered to be a tropical paradise to a lot of people and has a rich culture and history that surely has something to offer anyone who want to plan a vacatioin.

History of Mauritius

According to journals written by early sailors from the 1500’s, they discovered Mauridius while adrift from Portugal. The Dutch were actually the ones who settled the island in the 1630’s which they lost control of in 1715 to the French. By the early 1800’s France surrrended the island to England. Mauritius was considered to be part of the Chagos Archipelago, which was a group of islands that had a lot of strategic significance. In 1968, Mauritius finally gained their own independence.

The Culture of Mauritius

The island today thrives on both its cultural diversity and ethnic diversity. The national holiday they celebrate reflects some of the most important dates in their past like the Arrival of Indentured Laborers, Abolishment of slavery and the National Day. The people now celebrate these and other holidays with a lot of fun and reverence. The Chinese Spring Festival is celebrated by the lighting of fireworks to ward off the evil spirits. Thaipoosam Cavadee is celebrated by activities like sword climbing. The holiday of Divali actually turns much of the landscape of the island in to a map of beautiful and twinkling lights and the people of the island celebrate good over all of the evil in Hindu lore.

Mauritius has become a very popular vacation destination full of culture and celebration, and yet offers people a very tranquil and peaceful setting on a tropical island full of beauty and scenery. There are plenty of activities for everyone including deep sea fishing, golfing, and lots of cuisine. There are plenty of places to stay including bungalows, villas and hotels.
