History of Mauritius

According to journals written by early sailors from the 1500’s, they discovered Mauridius while adrift from Portugal. Mauritius was considered to be part of the Chagos Archipelago, which was a group of islands that had a lot of strategic significance. In 1968, Mauritius finally gained their own independence.

The national holiday they celebrate reflects some of the most important dates in their past like the Arrival of Indentured Laborers, Abolishment of slavery and the National Day.
