Cayo Coco: Cuba’s Hidden Treasure Chest

Want to get away from the hustle and bustle of every day life? Looking for a place that can give you the relaxed feel you are looking for? Then look at fourth largest island of Cuba…Cayo Coco Island.

While there are more happening spots on the island, there are toned down spots that can grant you the peace and serenity you are looking for. It’s an area most tourists don’t know about because there is no international airport nearby. It’s a charm that makes this island better than Varadero.

Cayo Coco Beaches

Cayo Coco beaches are a big must do. Since very few tourists know of them, you can relax in pure peacefulness on the snow-white sands that seem to go on for miles and miles and miles. For those people who need to escape the bustling areas, the Cayo Coco beaches are the places to go.

Cayo Coco Diving

Cayo Coco Island has the second largest coral reef system found on the globe so it’s no wonder divers love to visit the area. Divers like to check out the sea life and on Cayo Coco Island, the water is clear enough to allow this sport.

Some of the fish you can see include:

- Groupers
- Tarpons
- Snappers
- Spadefish

Cuba’s Unexplored

You won’t find a large number of sight seeing spots as you might see in Havana or Santiago de Cuba. If you are looking for an area of the island not usually stalked by tourists, then look at the wildlife of the island. Get a peek at the Cayo Coco Flamingos. It’s a reserve for the fauna and flora located on the island. Some of the animals that can be seen are:

- Pink flamingos
- Grey herons
- Pelicans
- Many duck species

If you want something a little more dangerous to look at, visit the crocodile farm.

If you want to see a milky lake, visit the Laguna de Leche or rather the Lake of Milk. It gets its name from the underwater lime deposits that make the color of the lake look like milk. It’s actually the largest lake in Cuba.

Do you want to see Cuba’s biggest export being processed? Then visit the sugar cane fields by steam train or stroll through a sugar mill. These give you an up close look at how sugar cane turns into the products you eat.

Cayo Coco Hotels and Entertainment

If you aren’t into nature, the hotels on Cayo Coco do have their own kind of entertainment to offer the guests. Each night, the Melia Cayo Coco will have entertainment and there are nightclubs to visit. Restaurants of the Cayo Coco hotels offer international cuisine for guests to try.

Cayo Coco doesn’t offer the attractions that Havana has. However, for rural Cuba, it still has its own wonders and appeals for those who just want to get away from every day life. For all, especially divers, Cayo Coco Island is worth checking out.
