A Holiday at Barbados

Part of the Lesser Antilles chain, this island lies just east of the Caribbean Sea. Barbados is an independent Continental Island-nation which gained its independence in 1996 after being part of the British colony for almost 250 years (since 1627 when the first British settlers arrived). It is now a proud member of the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations.

Its economy was based on agriculture thanks to its tropical climate which made it possible for large sugarcane estates to be established. It has since progressed considerably and thus both light manufacturing and tourism contribute to the economy too. The island boasts of its coral shore beaches of fine white sand along the blue-green sea on its West Coast. The East Coast of Barbados is a great surfing spot thanks to the strong trade winds and the beautiful waves.

While the highlight of Barbados is of course its beaches, the sea and its tropical weather, there are other attractions to this beautiful island. Among these tourist attractions are the:

Andromeda Gardens – Once a private collection of the renowned Bajan horticulturist, Iris Bannochie, it is now a park displaying the various treasured items. It is fully owned by the Barbados National Trust.

Bridgetown – The main commercial centre is also Barbados largest and liveliest city. Here you will find The Chamberlain Bridge, The Independence Arch, The Independence Square, The Fountain Gardens and St. Michaels Cathedral just to name a few.

Harrison’s Cave – A natural cave system formed after water eroded the limestone rock, forming numerous unusual stalactites and stalagmites. The caves have been open as a tourist attraction since 1981. To this day, water still runs along the cave walls and perhaps after a few hundred years we may be able to recognise new formations within the cave.

Barbados Concorde Experience – Did you know that at one time the Concorde regularly visits only four destinations? Barbados was one of them; the others were London, New York and Paris.
This is an exhibition featuring a retired Concorde airliner and portraying the history and development of this magnificent supersonic airliner.

So what are you waiting for? Come visit Barbados and experience its splendour.
